Brain water diffusion in normal and creatine-supplemented rats during transient global ischemia.

چکیده
Brain water diffusion in response to transient global ischemia (12 min), reperfusion (60 min), and cardiac arrest was monitored by localized proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The trace of the apparent diffusion coefficient tensor (ADC(Av)) was determined at high temporal resolution (10 sec) to assess the putative neuroprotective potential of oral creatine (Cr) in rats that received 2.2 g Cr-monohydrate per kg body weight per day for 10 days (n = 8) relative to controls (n = 9). Cr-fed rats revealed a statistically significant increase of the cerebral concentration ratio of Cr to choline-containing compounds (20%). The decrease of the ADC(Av) value during acute ischemia showed a three-phasic behavior in line with energy depletion, cytotoxic edema, and brain cooling. In Cr-fed rats, slightly less severe and mildly delayed diffusion changes during ischemia and similar beneficial trends during early reperfusion did not reach statistical significance. Effect of Cyperus rotundus on ischemia-induced brain damage and memory dysfunction in rats
Objective(s):Global cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury causes loss of pyramidal cells in CA1 region of hippocampus. In this study, we investigated the possible neuroprotective effects of the ethanol extract of Cyperus rotundus (EECR) on a model of global transient ischemia in rat, by evaluating the pathophysiology of the hippocampal tissue and spatial memory. Materials and Methods: Treatment ...
متن کاملThe effects of gallic acid on pain and memory following transient global ischemia/reperfusion in Wistar rats
Objective: It is generally agreed that most of the phenomena observed during brain ischemia and reperfusion can be explained by the damage to membrane structure. Oxidative stress is resulted in an imbalance between high consumption of oxygen and low levels of endogenous antioxidants. It is known that gallic acid (GA) is a strong antioxidant. The present study was carried out to evaluate the eff...
متن کاملEffect of Pentoxifylline on Ischemia- induced Brain Damage and Spatial Memory Impairment in Rat
Objective(s) The brief interruption of cerebral blood flow causes permanent brain damage and behavioral dysfunction. The hippocampus is highly vulnerable to ischemic insults, particularly the CA1 pyramidal cell layer. There is no effective pharmacological strategy for improving brain tissue damage induced by cerebral ischemia. Previous studies reported that pentoxifylline (PTX) has a neuroprot...
متن کاملReduction in ischemic brain injury following the administration of pentoxifylline after transient global ischemia/ reperfusion in a rat model
Background: It is well known that the hippocampus, the CA1 Pyramidal cells in particular, is selectively vulnerable during global cerebral ischemia. Recently, it is observed that pentoxifylline has a neuroprotective effect. This study explored the pharmacological relationship between ischemia-induced cell death of the hippocampus and the efficacy of a vasodilator agent (pentoxifylline) in the...
متن کاملThe Effect of Enalapril on Brain Edema and Cytokine Production Following Transient Focal Cerebral Ischemia in Mice
Introduction: Cytokines production as one of the inflammatory pathways in CNS is responsible for most brain damages following ischemia. On the other hand, during inflammation and brain ischemia, most of the renin- angiotensin components (RAS) increase locally. While it is established that blockade of RAS especially AT1 receptors has a protective effect on ischemia, the interaction of cytokines ...
